Heritage Open Day at Henley-in-Arden Memorial Hall
Saturday 13th September 2025 - Part of national Heritage Open Days 2025 (12-21 September) (https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/)
A showcase of this remarkable building that celebrated the stories of its uses and users. The event featured exhibitions of its changing life and structure and live performances throughout the day.

From its origins as a centre for public entertainment with reading rooms and a rifle range, to its service as a V.A.D hospital during World War I, the hall has stood as a silent witness to Henley's history.

Renovated after World War II as a memorial to those who served, it has been the cherished home of Merrydays Montessori School and Henley Drama Society, amongst others, since the 1950s. The hall has hosted countless celebrations, meetings, and milestones that have shaped our community's story. This special day recognised the rich history of this building and celebrated the dedicated custodians and patrons who have enjoyed and cared for this hall for over a century.

Visitors discovered the stories within the walls, with many local (and not so local!) names recognised, and memories were shared. Local books and art were availble for purchase with activities for all the family. Merrydays exhibited stories and photographs of past and present teachers and students and also demonstrated what Montessori teaching is all about.

The day was opened by performers from Henley High School who shared highlights from their recent school musical, Matilda Jr! Later, Vintage Vocalist Amy Price brought songs from across the ages. Henley Drama Society (HADS) shared excerpts from Ray Evan's play telling the story of the opening of the hall. Tone Division closed the event with awesome rock covers from across the decades. Fresh from a summer of festivals, In for a Penne served from the car park where Silhill Morris danced. There was a bar from the kitchen with tea, coffee and Henley Ice Cream also on sale.
